What is domestic violence?

Domestic violence is when a partner in an intimate relationship abuses the other. It takes any forms including physical, sexual, emotional and mental.

Trends

Nigeria has one of the highest rates of domestic violence in Africa. My thoughts on this is that domestic violence has existed since the days of our fore fathers, however there was no platform to speak. Also, there is a deep cultural belief that it is socially acceptable to hit a woman to discipline a spouse. The presence of social media platforms has given a voice to the women.

Facts

• Violence against women - particularly intimate partner violence and sexual violence - are major public health problems and violations of women's human rights.

• Global estimates published by WHO indicate that about 1 in 3 (35%) women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.

Advice
